When it comes to natural disasters, they can cause costly damage to your home. This is damage that you probably can’t afford to repair out-of-pocket. Homeowners insurance typically covers damage to your home caused by things that are out of your control, such as theft, vandalism, lightning, fire, hail, and more. However, most insurance plans do not automatically cover other natural disasters like earthquakes, hurricanes, and floods.
It’s important to find out which types of natural disasters your specific insurance plan covers. Then you should purchase additional insurance where necessary.
Floods
If you live near the coast, then you’ll want to get flood insurance. To get flood insurance, one must apply through the government’s National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). However, not everyone can purchase flood insurance.
Earthquakes
If you live somewhere that is prone to earthquakes, then you will want coverage for this type of natural disaster. Sinkholes and landslides are not usually covered because anything related with ground movement (see: earthquakes) are not covered. You will need to purchase separate insurance if you live somewhere that is prone to landslides or earthquakes.
Wind damage
Most policies will cover wind damage, including hurricanes and tornadoes, and even the flooding or water damage that may come with these storms. However, if you live in an area that is more susceptible to these types of storms, then your policy may exclude damages such as flooding from a hurricane. If you live on the coast, it is a good idea to purchase flood insurance. This ensures that you are covered no matter what causes the flood.
If a tree falls on your home, the cause of the fall is what determines whether the damage is covered by insurance. If it was due to the wind or lightning of a bad storm, it will typically be covered. However, if the tree has been rotting in your back yard for years and falls due to negligence, you are responsible.
Additional riders
Some additions to your home, such as pools and Jacuzzi tubs, may require additional insurance to protect against natural disasters. These are called insurance riders. Many policies will not include these additions to your property when it comes to storm damage.
If disaster does strike, be sure to take photos of all of the damage and make a list of everything that has been damaged. This will make the claim filing process go by a lot more smoothly.
